Swaddling

To swaddle or not to swaddle. This is the question and a source of great contention between baby and me. Everyone around me highly recommends swaddling baby during naps and bedtime. The pediatrician tells me it will deeply impact my baby's sleep and keep her from startling herself awake. I have ordered all kinds of swaddles...the swaddle pod, true wombie and miracle blanket to name a few. Everyone seems to agree that swaddles help to recreate the security and warmth of the womb. Everyone seems to agree that swaddles are a positive thing. Everyone except my baby.

She appears to have quite a different perception of the swaddle...mainly as an instrument of torture. My baby resists being placed into her swaddles and magically finds ways to break free. Her nimble fingers find their way back to her face regardless of the snugness of the swaddle. She is my little Houdini. All kidding aside though, I feel like a criminal wrapping my baby up like a burrito against her will. On the other hand, once securely swaddled, baby will drift off to a deep sleep.

So swaddle fans, any advice?

  1. Everyone used to tell me to swaddle her. But she HATED it!! I stuck with it for a whole week, and she still didn't want anything to do with it. I gave up finally, and she's been sleeping soundly through the night since she was 6 weeks old... I guess it's just not for everyone, and the only true advice you can get is: YOU are the mother, follow your instincts. Mother nature is a pretty impressive lady, she gave you all you need to know. Listen to your guts xx

    1. Thanks for your response! Glad to hear my baby isn't alone in her dislike of swaddles!
